Depression is a common mental disorder and can happen to people of all ages.


According to World Health Organization (WHO), more than 264 million people suffer from depression globally. Depression is a common mental disorder and can happen to people of all ages.

Drugs and alcohol merely distract you from reality but do not cure depression, only worsen it. Long-term substance abuse brings individuals down with mental and physical degradation and leads them to darkness.

As David Mitchell said-

“You say you’re “depressed”- all I see is resilience. You’re allowed to feel messed up and inside out. It doesn’t mean that you’re defective- It just means you’re human.”


Here’s how one can battle depression without turning to substance addiction-

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle
    A balanced life keeps you in control of your emotions. A healthy diet, a proper sleep routine, exercising- all these keep your stress and anxiety at their lowest. To deal with depression, start a routine that incorporates a balanced diet, exercise, and proper sleep. Being in control of your life helps fight depression.

  • Meditation and mindfulness
    Some studies have found that meditation is almost as effective as antidepressants. Taking time for meditating, practicing mindfulness, and reflecting on your overall self leave a lasting effect on your mind.

  • Spending time with your loved ones
    Compassion helps individuals stay happy and motivated. If you’re feeling depressed, start interacting with your family and friends more. Ask for help if you feel the need.

  • Therapy
    For many people, psychotherapy has been quite fruitful in treating depression. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Brainspotting therapy, Neurofeedback therapy, TMS therapy- are some of the therapies that have helped people with ADHD, PTSD, depression, and many more psychological disorders.


What helps to deal with depression is having strong willpower and proper medication (when needed). Stay strong, and commit to the process.
