Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, approximately 20 million Americans suffer from a substance use disorder.

Substance use disorders impact your entire life, putting your health at risk and damaging your relationships and career. If you suffer from a substance use disorder, the best thing you can do is turn to a substance use disorder treatment program.

What Is Substance Use Disorder (SUD)?

A substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic mental illness that affects your brain and your behavior. It is a complex condition in which you experience the uncontrollable need to use a substance despite the negative consequences it brings.

People with substance use disorders can have distorted thinking patterns, as the substance makes structural changes to the brain and affects the reward and pleasure centers.

For some, a SUD develops after taking prescribed medications for pain. For others, a substance use disorder begins with recreational use in social situations, but it can spiral out of control quickly.

The risk of developing a SUD varies from person to person, but certain genetic and environmental factors can increase your chances of developing an addiction.

Getting treatment for substance use disorders is the best way of achieving sobriety.

Signs and Symptoms of Substance Use Disorder

The most common symptoms of a SUD are:

  • Having intense urges for a substance

  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms if you stop using

  • Lying about substance use

  • Hiding substance use

  • Needing to use more often or to use higher doses

Each substance has different effects on the body, but there are common physical signs that indicate you or a loved one has a problem. According to MentalHealth.gov, the most common signs are:

  • Changes in pupils

  • Runny nose or sniffling

  • Sudden weight gain or loss

  • Slurred speech

  • Impaired coordination

  • Tremors

  • Deteriorating personal hygiene

  • Changes in sleep patterns

  • Changes in appetite

If you notice these signs, turning to a substance use treatment program is important.

Our services are intended to support you along in your journey before, during, and after you face your most challenging times.

Substance Use Disorders

In recent years, the DSM-5 began using the term “Substance Use Disorder” in place of the word “Addiction”. Substance Use Disorders are also classified on a spectrum now ranging from mild to moderate to severe. In order to determine the severity of one’s disorder, there are 11 total classifying criteria such as increases in tolerance, cravings or urges, and the inability to stop using despite repeated negative consequences.

There were over 100,000 deaths from drug overdose between April ‘20 and April ’21. This is the most ever reported in a single year.

FAMILY HEALING

Substance use disorders are a family disease. Family members, friends, and other people close to the person with the disorder often report experiencing emotional volatility, depression, increased stress levels, extreme feelings of helplessness, and more. It is imperative that those close to someone with a substance use disorder also seek their own support and healing. Studies show that if a family does their own work, the outcome of their loved one’s treatment improves as well.

Over 42% of employees report that their productivity suffers when they have a loved one with a substance use disorder at home.

Co-Occurring Disorders

Substance use disorders are classified as a mental illness. Oftentimes, those affected with an addiction also experience other co-occurring disorders such as mood disorders, anxiety/stress disorders, personality disorders, and trauma related disorders. Our belief, along with many other professionals, is that most people develop a substance use disorder in response to other underlying disorders or previous traumas. Treating the substance use disorder often means finding the most appropriate type of treatment for the underlying disorder.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) report that 45% of Americans suffer from a co-occurring diagnosis.
